A Courteous Cancellation?

Heroes is based on comic book-style storytelling

I was going to write about The Office this week, but recent news has changed my plans. It has been revealed that NBC has picked up a number of promising new pilots which has caused them to completely rethink their lineup. First on the chopping block: Heroes. This is by no means surprising since the show’s ratings have been steadily decreasing since the second season. What IS surprising, is the fact that there are rumors circulating which suggest there will be some kind of story-closure.

In similar circumstances, the networks are never quite so courteous. Usually they just cut and run, and don’t care about tying up loose ends. In some cases, such as with Firefly, the fan following is so strong that a movie is produced after-the-fact. It seems that NBC is planning to have some kind of TV-based movie produced if they do indeed cancel the show. I say “if” because most of this is rumor-based. The show was originally speculated to return for half-season to come to an official close. I’m sad to see the show go, but not because of the story. The show jumped the shark seasons ago, but I ADORE Zachary Quinto (Sylar) and will miss seeing him in action. Hopefully he will find another TV-based project in the near future.

With this news also comes a lot of talk about what ABC shows will be cancelled. On the list: FlashForward, and the highly underrated The Deep End. Not on the list: V, which is an awful show (which I plan on discussing in the future). I’ve written about how much I love FlashForward before, so I’m pretty devastated by this prediction. I hope when the fall lineups are announced the shows that deserve to have seasons are properly recognized. Because I’m certain that ABC won’t have the courtesy to nicely wrap the shows they drop.

DISCUSS: What shows do you want to see renewed? What are your feelings regarding Heroes?
