I recently received a number of odd looks and questions when I expressed to some Texans that I would prefer to live in the Northeast than in the South. This is something I’ve encountered a lot of in my life since I am very much a cold-weather girl. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the beach, and the ocean, and all those things associated with warm weather and sun, I just prefer to enjoy them in small doses, or cooler temperatures. I am pretty sure this anomaly is caused by my very northeastern upbringing. I was born and raised here in New York, and frequently would travel with my family to Maine for vacations, mostly in the summer. I grew up with very cold, snowy winters and spent a lot of my summers on Maine beaches where it never really got too hot. I guess my body just got used to dealing with temperatures that never really got much higher than the 80s. I just don’t understand why so many people think this is a bad thing.
My favorite type of weather has always been lightning storms, and Troy gets some pretty spectacular ones in the spring and summer. I love that, because it cools everything down at the end of the day. It’s also great fun to run out in the rain after a particularly hot day mid-summer. The biggest problem I have with hot weather versus cold weather is that if you as a human are cold, you can keep adding layers to keep warm, but if you are hot, you reach a point where you can’t take off any more layers to get cool. I just hate that feeling of being over-heated. To me, nothing beats a cool autumn breeze, or that type of light fluffy snow that sticks to your hair. Call me crazy, but the prospect of living in the south where snow is almost unheard of and where the trees don’t shed their leaves in the fall is completely unappealing. I guess I’ll always be a northeast girl.
