Some Theories And Thoughts On Lost

So far I have avoided talking about Lost on here since it seems to be a very sensitive subject to many. Since the show is fast approaching it’s end, I felt that it was finally time to address my feelings on the matter. I’d like to start with what transpired on this week’s episode, so if you haven’t seen it yet, stop reading now so you’re not spoiled.

A lot happened in this one episode, and it actually only served to help prove my current theory about where the plot is going. I’m going to be very blunt here, of all the “tragedies” to occur in this one episode, the one I’m most upset about is the loss of the submarine. Don’t get me wrong, I was sad for the loss of Sayid, Sun, and Jin, but in the grand scheme of things, the submarine was of the most use to the series. I had considered Sayid as good as dead after he “died” the first time back at the Temple. His character changed so dramatically that he wasn’t the same and I didn’t connect with him the way I used to. As for Sun and Jin, I’m seriously annoyed with them. They get separated for all this time, finally find each other, and then are so caught up in themselves that they completely forget about their daughter in the process. As much as it would’ve been painful for him, Jin could’ve easily survived and gone on to raise this daughter that he never knew. I thought it was pretty darn selfish of him. Also, I was just slightly disappointed with the writers for their not-so-subtle Titanic reference. I mean, really? Meanwhile, the submarine, which was probably the most viable way off the island is gone. So now it’s the c4-riddled plane or nothing.

Pretty much everyone in this image is dead.

As for the overarching plot that leads to the finale. I won’t even pretend to have a reasonable theory about how the show will end. It was made known that they needed to have entirely new sets built just to film the last episode, so really, it could be anything at this point. In the short-term story, I have some ideas. Firstly, I think the key to linking the island reality with the sideways reality is Desmond. He clearly had some kind of revelation and is working to make it happen. Yes, he is in the bottom of a well right now, but I’m convinced that the man-in-black wouldn’t have sent him there if he hadn’t found him to be a real threat. I can’t even begin to tell you HOW the two worlds will resolve themselves, but I can guarantee you that Desmond will be at the center of it.

Now for this business with the Candidates. Having Sun and Jin die really confused me. As Jack figured out, anyone who has been touched by Jacob can’t die. It was my understanding that this included Sun and Jin. So clearly there are rules attached to this “gift” that have not yet been fully explained. It also opens the door for many more deaths in the future. I’m pretty convinced that Kate is going to be killed off, mostly because she is not on the list and now she has this bullet wound. She’s really not needed anymore. I think Kate’s death will lead Sawyer to do something rash that will get him killed. That leaves either Jack or Hurley to take Jacob’s place as the island’s protector. I would say “It’s going to be Jack!” but that’s just what they WANT you to think, so who knows.

I’d like to think that the man-in-black won’t make it off the island, and the side-ways reality will become true so that everyone gets to live, but that’s too perfect of an ending. I absolutely hate perfect endings, because it’s so unrealistic. Real life doesn’t work that way. So, yes, I hope some more bad things will happen, but it’s only because I love this show and I don’t want it to have a crappy ending. Although the writers have already proven that they know how to write surprises. I can’t wait to see where they take us.

DISCUSS: What are your Lost theories? How do you think the show will end?
